It can be noted that although Grammar-Sheriff's post is arguably aggressive, neither issue is a direct attack on Dean Tuttle. Both can be construed as constructive criticism. The first issue of typing errors often reflects professionalism (here: in posts); if our laws were written in crayon with misspellings and grammatical mistakes, none would be taken seriously by the masses. The second issue of a blog lacking substance is an opinion about the blog, not Dean Tuttle as a whole. Lack of substance is a legitimate concern.

However, on an anonymous forum such as this, it's typical to read such anal-retentive posts as personal attacks.

The Alcohol Coalition, which I chair did recommend allowing hard alcohol but the institution decided not to, for some very compelling reasons.

Perhaps it would be appropriate to share these compelling reasons with the people they have affected. All too often institutions and holders of institutional authority get away with these types of replies that barely ever add any insight to the issue.

So, please, actually explain the action instead of just forcing us to accept it on your word. Maybe with more fully informed students there will be a higher level of discourse on the topic. Maybe if there was greater clarity, students would be less likely to react in the extreme or initiate attacks against the Dean.

Thank you for your consideration.

Post #17: well put. I'd like to know all the compelling reasons. I'm not in favor of attacking anyone personally; I'd like to hear everything & make my own decisions, that's why I'm in favor of the Dean's participation. It's a good thing. That's also why I agree with post #12. The Dean's failure to address that issue makes me ( quite honestly) suspicious. I'll give everyone the benefit of the doubt, but I'm with those who feel legitimate inquiries need to be answered. It is the failure to do so that causes frustration and anger.

If you'd care to elaborate, I'd be very interested in hearing the reasons for and against hard alcohol.

Also, my Catholic joke was in poor taste, and I apologize. I've had some bad experiences with the church.

C) Oh no, your parents might learn you drink! You're an adult, if you can't let your parents know you drink that's between you and them, not the school. Want them to not find out? Start paying for school on your own and that way you're the only one who gets the invoices.

A very good point. And if you're old enough to be in college, I think you should be able to be honest about alcohol (and other aspects of your life) with your parents. They may take the news hard at first, but you're old enough to take most, if not all, responsibility for your choices. Mom and Dad can't decide things for you. If the drinking is so excessive that you really aren't okay with being honest, you've got some thinking to do about your life.

The reasons that hard alcohol aren't allowed are about student health and safety. You could kill yourself on beer in a day or so I suppose, but the argument against hard alcohol is that people can drink a large amount in a short period of time and suffer alcohol poisoning. In general the students who have been hospitalized for alcohol poisoning have almost always done so with hard alcohol. Talk to students the day after their 21st birthday and usually they are doing shots the night before. I guess it is just one reason.

Of course I wouldn't want my quickly typed responses to reflect on the quality of posts such as "The Maid Caught Me..."

Apology accepted, only because I know what you intended. In actuality, however, an "apology" is a defense of one's position. So what you wanted was to ask for " forgiveness." Enough pedagogy............. By the way, what "bad experiences" did you have with the Church, Barca?

Just for clarity, posts 22 and 23 were from the Dean... Sorry! I wasn't the one apologizing for the Catholic joke, but I wasn't offended.

Dean, I am post #23 ( or to quote barca-- '" socrates"). I figured you were post #22, but please do not take credit for the brilliant points I made in the post you erroneously/ wrongfully take credit for, that being post #23. I think you simply made a mistake in your post #26.
